I'm finding serious problems (system lock/crash) trying to xfer files from a shared folder across a network. So far, it only seems to be a problem in the 64-bit version of Vista.
Try placing a 50MB file in the Public folder on a 64bit system. Make sure sharing is turned on. Then, go to another machine and try to copy the file through the network. If that works, then try it with a 1G file.
There are a LOT of variables here, so before I spend much more time trying to diagnose, I wanted to find out if others had noticed any issues.

5308-64: Serious file I/O issue?
OK, I've tried doing this with a Futurama video (I used Movie Maker to make it into a Pocket PC optimised file) so that made it 63MB which is thereabouts OK. That works fine.
I tried zipping my entire Counter-Strike directory which amazingly comes to 1.02GB and that also works fine... try submitting this as a bug :o)

Sorry to hear that :) Sounds like I've got a bit more work ahead of me.
What was the system configuration on the other machine?

Well, I had two machines:
Machine 1: \\VISTACHROME 256MB RAM, AMD 1900+ 32-bit processor 30GB hard disk space, Glass enabled. System Performance Rating: 2
Machine 2: \\VISTAPLATINUM 1GB RAM, Dual Core AMD 64 230GB hard disk space, Glass enabled. System Performance Rating: 4
Transported files from \\VISTACHROME to \\VISTAPLATINUM over the network, with Windows Server 2003 R2 server in place.

I'm not sure about the exact nature of the problem you are seeing while transferring large files. If you are still seeing problems and can elaborate on the problem, we could diagonise the issue.
* Is transfer failing with any particular error code ? * Is the system blue-screening while transferring data ? * Is the system taking a unusually long time to tranfer fails (which might manifest itself as a system lock/hang) ?
Also, what OS are the server and client running ?
If you can get a network capture (using netmon/ethereal), that might be a good start to investigate this.

Here's some more detail:
1) The same problem occurs when running under safe mode wi networking 2) I'm mapping a network drive to the remote computer (drive S:) 3) I copy the file from my 5308-64 machine to drive S (XP-pro machine) 4) "Calculating time remaining" box pops up - and never gets to next step 5) The network connection drops (?!) Drive S no longer exists 6) There doesn't seem to be a corresponding error message in the log, nor is there an error message on screen 7) The only way to recover is to power the machine off
The error sounds real familiar. I seem to remember something about the drive mappings disappearing during file copies back in Win 98. I dunno if it's related...

Yup. I set things up to do a Kernel Dump on crash, but the mapped drive/folder sharing lockup doesn't cause a managed crash. It just locks the system solid.
Since I noted these issues, there has been at least one (or two?) interim release of a new beta. Does it make sense to continue to debug an older release when the code we might be addressing could have been changed?

What kind of wireless adapter do you have? Check either your manufacturer or Windows Update for new drivers.
I have the Intel 2200 BG and until I updated the driver via Windows Update, I could not connect to the Internet either...

Heh. If it is you'll be out of luck anyway. The first thing the canonical name does is redirect to:
http://www.meteoschweiz.ch/web/de/wetter.html
However, if necessary you could workaround that by adding a HOSTS entry with the above IP address and the name you are having trouble using.
BTW you can also try checking connectivity with the telnet 80 command.
E.g. in a cmd window enter:
telnet www.meteoschweiz.ch 80
If the screen clears that means you have reached an HTTP server.
To test further you can try entering in that blank screen:
GET /
(That's GET<space><slash><Enter>. Just those 3 keystrokes.)
Oops. This is on Vista? I understand you don't have telnet.exe on it? Do you have a HyperTerminal then? You can do the same thing with it using its TCP/IP Winsock connection option.
BTW to give your thread a larger Vista readership I have added a cross-post to Vista General and Networking. Users of Vista's Help portal may not be aware that the last 5 newsgroups listed there as "Vista newsgroups" (including this one) are in fact common newsgroups which are not Vista specific.

Hello Sandi, I ran tracert on one of the sites that I'm trying to reach. Here is the message: V:\>tracert www.quixtar.com Unable to resolve target system name www.quixtar.com.
That name was slow resolving for me.
<example> DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.quixtar.com Addresses: 167.23.137.2, 167.23.9.2 </example>
Perhaps you should try using nslookup too like that to be sure that the lookup can be done.
Then do ping -n 1 (or tracert) to try to get that host name loaded into dnscache. Do not worry if the ping or tracert fail; you are only using them to load the lookup into the dnscache.
Then your iexplore.exe lookups would have a better chance of success.
Here is the message that I receive when I try to reach it in IE 7.
"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".
My guess is that iexplore.exe may not tolerate the above timeout that nslookup shows.
If none of those workarounds helps make iexplore.exe resolve an address for that name you may have to add an entry for it into your HOSTS file. E.g. using the information from the above reply you could insert the following line:
167.23.137.2 www.quixtar.com
BTW in case Vista has changed how this mechanism works (e.g. made the timeout a user controllable setting) I am cross-posting this to the Vista Networking NG.
Thanks,
Good luck

When I try to connect to my ISP using IE-7, the connection seems to succeed (advisories showing connection), but then IE immediately disconnects. Subsequent attempts also fail. However, if I try connecting using MS Mail prior to opening IE, the connection succeeds and I am able to open IE and browse normally. (But if I try IE first, then neither it or MS Mail will connect.) Rebooting will allow MS Mail to connect, but not IE. Since supposedly they share dialup properties and internet protocols, I am puzzled. Have reported this to MS. Has anyone else experienced this, and/or have any ideas on correcting this problem?

Let me sasy first that the new Windows Firewall is a great leap forward, but it is very complex and difficult to configure. I suspect once adm/admx files are available that it may become easier. Third-party firewalls are much easier to configure than Vista Firewall. Complexity is the hobgoblin of security, and Microsoft has made the Windows Firewall very diffiuclt to understand an onerous to configure. Rules that I put in to open the firewall to domain connectivity appear not to work.
I would recommend to anyone deploying Vista in a pre-existing domain infrastructure to disable Windows Firewall completely for the near term.

This problem still exists in RC1 5278 and I'm very surprised Vista is in RC stage when there are serious bugs like this.
Loss of internet connectivity happens only in IE and Windows Mail at random times. Most occasions when it occurs, it will fix itself maybe some minutes later. Sometimes though a reboot is required.
As I stated, it only happens in IE and Windows Mail. All other applications (including downloaders, programs wanting updates, PING & TRACERT commands etc) still access the internet fine. This is also the same for computers on the network that use this computer's internet. They can still access the internet fine.
This sorted my problem, thanks for all the help.

I've been using a Linksys WRT54G wireless point with WPA on XP and it worked fine. However, I can't get it to work under Vista. If I disable all security (broadcast SSID and no encryption), it works, but add even the lightest security and it won't connect. The "connect to a network" wizard works fine - it even detects if I got the SSID and key right, but when it comes time to actually connect, it fails and offers to "repair" the connection (does nothing).
I would chalk this up to a driver problem, but the fact that it works until Vista gets involved with security makes me wonder if it's a Windows issue.
Any thoughts/advice? Thanks in advance.
My Broadcom wireless works fine with Vista but only if the Windows Firewall is turned off. For some reason it keeps turning itself back on though.
A little bit more info would be helpful. How does your network look like? It which stage does the network connection to live fail (run the network test on the xbox)?

hi all!
okay, so how can i view the network like in xp? what i mean is: in xp, you right-click 'my computer' and select 'explore.' then expand 'my network places.' then expand 'entire network.' then expand 'microsoft windows network.' from there, you see a list of all the domains in the forest. (i work at ucla. the root is ucla.edu and there are hundreds of domains under that. i manage only a few of them).
in vista (rc1), you don't see anything if network discovery is off. but if it's on, it just lists every single freaking pc it can find on the whole freakin' campus, without discretion. this is just so unwanted and unnecessary, i can't believe it. but, the way things are laid out now (god, i hate the new network view!! maybe i'll get used to it in like 5 years...), i can't find any way to make this behave the way i want, which is: just show me the roots of the domains, like in xp. if i want to discover deeper, i'll expand it, right? who's with me? c'mon guys, you know i'm right!
thx!
I can confirm that I am having the same issues. I work for the ITI Data Networks group here at Purdue University. We too use 802.1x/RADIUS authentication utilizing PEAP/MSCHAP. I have tried setting up Vista just like I would in XP.
Wireless Profile: Connection Connect Automatically when this network is in range (checked) Connect even if the network is not broadcasting (checked) Security Security Type: WPA-Enterprise Encryption Type: TKIP Network Authentication Method: Protected EAP (PEAP) Settings Validate Server Certificate (checked) Trusted Root Certification Authorities: Thawte Premium Server CA Authentication Method: Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) Configure Automatically use my windows login name and password (UNCHECKED) Enable Fast Reconnect (checked) Cache user information for subsequent connections (checked)
The result is that you receive a bubble asking for "Addition information is required to connect to PAL2.0" Clicking it prompts you for your credentials. I enter the username and password and click OK. Within 30 seconds "Addition information is required to connect to PAL2.0" bubble appears again. This loop will continue to happen. Enter in a username and password, wait, bubble back again, repeat.
Is this a known problem with Vista?

Our school is using a similar network with radius/802.1x credential based authentication that only requires a username and password. I followed the instructions and have zipped the entire folder and made them available at http://www.utdallas.edu/~jmg019010/wireless_trace.zip. I ran similar commands on a successful XP client that is almost exactly the same and made it available at http://www.utdallas.edu/~jmg019010/XP_trace.zip. Today was my first attempt at this, and i will be taking the system home to try on my home network to make sure it can connect to open, wep, wpa networks as well.
I look forward to future updates, Jeff Gibson

Also note that in vista to get a balloon for entering credentials, you must uncheck the box which says "Use my windows credentials" in the MSCHAPv2 advanced settings. OR just use discovery to connect to a 1x/WPA network while logged on as a non-domain user. Either of these methods will cause a balloon to appear to enter alternate credentials.
If you are still seeing a failure, the following steps will log what is going wrong:
1. Launch an elevated command prompt 2. netsh wlan set tra yes 3. Reproduce the problem 4. netsh wlan set tra no (make sure this is still in an elevated command prompt, and wait for the command to complete) 5. Tracing results will be in %windir%\tracing\wireless (try report.html or just attach a zip file of the dir)

"Ladislav" wrote in message I the same problem, manualy configuration is correctly but after try connect to wireless network - Vista not asked userneme and password.
In XP this working correctly and after 10-20 seconds I just get a baloon I saying I need to provide additional credentials.

Are you on a domain or workgroup? Are you using certificate based authentication?
Assuming that you are connecting to a network that requires a certificate, you are probably hitting the following:
In vista the default authentication was changed from certificate based auth to PEAP/MSCHAPv2. This means when using discovery to connect to a network for which requires an EAP type, this is the new default. To connect to a network which uses another eap type you need to create a wireless profile for that network in advance. This can be done through group policy or by creating a profile from the "Get connected Wizard."
To do this, just click "set up a connection or network" on the "connect to a network" page (then chose "Manually connect to a wireless network"). After typing the SSID (case sensitive) and setting the initial security settings, click next. The next page will have a button which says "Change connection settings." Click it. Here you can change the auth type back to "Smart card or other certificate" on the "security" tab. Set any other relavent settings while here. After pressing OK, you should be connected to your network (assuming that automatic connections were allowed earlier in the process).
The design of the wireless "discovery" (using the UI) phase is not necessarily designed to connect to networks which require management and there are a range of options to create/distribute wireless profiles in advance from netsh scripting to group policy.
Creating a wireless profile (steps above) is the more powerful method of connecting to any type of network manually.

"Costanza" wrote in message I thought it would be something like that. I just don't really want to annoy our sys admins about it too much as it is my personal laptop I have decided to run Vista on, trying to connect to work wireless network.

You're not alone.
Same setup, same problem. No idea how to solve this tough. Somehow my radius server (ZyXEL Vantage Radius 50) doesn't seem to like what is passed to it.

The problem that stopped me using Beta 2, is still there with RC1 for me.
Trying to connect to WPA Enterprise, TKIP PEAP with certificate validation off, and just using a username/password combination, no domain name. This worked fine in XP.
I get asked for my username and password, provide the ones which have worked for a long
